Silence by Minna de Fosset
This verse was dedicated to my dear friend Louise Noltemeyer. A letter from Minna de Fosset to Louise Noltemeyer (my grandmother on my mother's family), Dated 6 Oct 1905.
You hear of the gift
Of Silver Speech so rare,
But none with the power
Of Golden Silence can compare.
Silence is a golden plant,
That only culture can produce;
Brightly gleam its golden rays
When put to constant use.
The plant of Silence bears
The diamond flower called Thought,
Countless are the beautious rays
This wondrous flower has brought!
Silence is the golden key
That opens Wisdom's mighty door;
With Silence Thought can enter
And Wisdom's unknown depths explore.
Silence is the only monarch
King or emperor cannot sway
No enemy on earth can know
Thoughts that in Silence lay.
Silence as a royal queen
Can pass her subjects by;
Smiles or tears cannot impel
Where her hidden treasures lie.
Silence is a patient lover
Long it loves and deep,
Till the mighty love-flame
Its own will gently reap.
Silence is the truest friend
For none will it betray,
Silence Sheds its brightest light
On the doubtful, weary way.
Silence brings the scoffer shame
Tis scarce to comprehend!
Silence is the only weapon
That can pure innocence defend.
Silence stands as most supreme
In the Eyes of God,
Silence only can be broken
By the Will of God.
